What happens to the food not eaten in restaurants or cafes?

I'm new here. I don't know anything about this restaurants or cafes. So I need to know about this in details.Please, some one helps me. All restaurants claim to have "fresh food" that is apparently made on the day of consumption, so where does the uneaten food go? Do they throw it out? Do they give it to the homeless?
