What has been your experience with dyeing your hair with henna?
I have been dying hair with henna since about a couple of years now. And, I am quite satisfied with the results. This is primarily because I had done a lot of research to understand the nuances before I started using this herb.
First things first, natural dyes or herbs will only add to your existing hair colour. This not many people know about. Being natural, they do not have any bleaching agents. So, they don’t bleach away the pre-existing normal hair colour before colouring unlike chemical hair colours with high doses of harmful bleach. They only coat the hair strands with the new pigment. So, for example, if you were born with black hair, and now you want to turn it light brown, that will never happen with natural dyes like henna and indigo. They will, at the most, colour your greying strands into light brown since they are already devoid of colour, but beyond that they will do nothing else.
Secondly, natural dyes like henna and indigo naturally condition and hydrate hair bringing about its natural shine and luster. This is another effect missing in chemical hair colours.
And, thirdly, henna and indigo will stay on hair for only about a month. After that you will require retouching.
That being said, I have been using Indus Valley Bio-Organic Herbal Henna Powder which has given me fantastic results. It will give you a red-orange shade. To get black to brown shades use it with indigo powder.
