Deaf children can learn British Sign Language (BSL) through various means, depending on their environment, access to resources, and the support they receive. Here are some key ways they might learn BSL:
1. Family and Home Environment
- Deaf Parents: If a child is born to deaf parents who use BSL, the child will likely learn BSL as their first language naturally through daily interactions, just as hearing children learn spoken languages.
- Hearing Parents: Hearing parents who are committed to learning BSL can also teach it to their child. They may take BSL classes and use the language consistently at home.
2. Specialized Schools for the Deaf
- Many deaf children attend schools specifically designed for deaf students where BSL is the primary mode of communication. Teachers, staff, and peers all use BSL, creating an immersive environment where children can learn and practice the language.
3. Early Intervention Programs
- Early intervention services often provide support to families with deaf children, including BSL instruction. These programs might offer home visits by specialists who teach BSL to both the child and the family.
4. Community and Social Interaction
- Interaction with other deaf children and adults in the community, such as through deaf clubs, playgroups, or events, can help a child learn BSL. Social settings provide natural opportunities to practice and learn the language.
5. Technology and Media
- There are various apps, online courses, and videos designed to teach BSL to children. These tools can be particularly useful for supplementing learning at home or for families who do not have easy access to BSL resources.
6. Speech and Language Therapists
- Some deaf children receive support from speech and language therapists who are trained in BSL. These professionals can work with children one-on-one or in small groups to help them develop their BSL skills.
7. BSL Courses and Classes
- Some children, especially those who are older, might attend BSL classes, either in person or online. These classes can be tailored to different age groups and skill levels.
8. Sign Language Interpreters
- In some cases, sign language interpreters may assist in educational settings, helping to bridge communication between hearing teachers and deaf students, which indirectly supports the child’s learning of BSL.
Each child’s learning journey is unique, and the effectiveness of these methods can vary depending on individual circumstances. The goal is to provide consistent exposure to BSL in various contexts to help the child develop fluency.

If you are a business professional, than you use your iPhone for more than simply keeping in touch with your friends and family, in many cases your iPhone is your link to the business world. Whether you are keeping track of your stocks, checking your e-mail or conducting conference calls while on your way to a business meeting, your iPhone is literally your key to keeping connected with your professional life. However, if you are like most business professionals, than you travel the globe in order to keep your business active and profitable. There are many concerns that people have with cell phones are whether or not you will be able to use your phone when you are in a different country, especially if you are visiting for an extended period of time.
Like most cell phones, the iPhone works with a particular cell phone carrier, and in this case you have your service through AT&T/Cingular. Many business professionals want the security in knowing that their cell phone service will not be disrupted simply because they travel from country to country. Since the iPhone is serviced by AT&T/Cingular, you will not have to worry about loosing service, or features, because the iPhone uses the GSM system. GSM is an acronym that stands for Global System for Mobile communication, thus allowing you to use your cell phone in many different countries. Actually, there are over one hundred countries around the world that use GSM, thus allowing you to keep using your iPhone without any hindrance to cell service.
Many business travelers go to Europe and Asia, and since their iPhone uses GSM, they are able to have excellent service throughout both of these locations. However, there are some precautions that you will want to take before you leave the country with your iPhone. If you have ever traveled throughout the world and used your cell phone, you were probably surprised by extremely high charges for phone and data use.
This is because your number is an American telephone number, thus every call you make within another country is looked upon by your carrier as an international call. If you are overseas for quite some time, than it is easy to accumulate several hundred dollars worth of fees and roaming charges, this is why you will want to alter you calling plan if you travel overseas frequently.
AT&T/Cingular has really great international calling plans that are very cost effective. Thus you are able to still travel throughout the world without having to worry about roaming and international call fees. Also, if you use data on your iPhone, which most of you do, you will want to make sure that you have an international data plan as well. The worst homecoming surprise you can get is opening your cell phone bill only to find several hundred dollars worth of extra charges and fees. However, if you plan ahead and make sure that you obtain a new service plan that includes international cell phone use, you will not have to worry about extremely high charges.

Hello, Thanks for your question.
Here are the Top 5 Reasons Not to Own an iPhone
Apple has done a great job telling the world about their iPhone. The advertising has worked and the iPhone is one of the hottest cell phones to own. For those interested in keeping up with the Jones’ the iPhone is a must have item this year and probably next year too. The question is does the Apple iPhone live up to the hype. Is the iPhone really worth top dollar? What do the users say? Here are the top 5 reasons not to own an iPhone.
The first reason is the price. This is a very expensive cell phone. The average price for an iPhone is between $500 – $600. That is a lot of money for a phone. At this price it is really a luxury item as there are phones that offer similar features for a lot less money. For internet and email capabilities you can get a Blackberry or Motorola Q for a lot less than an iPhone. If you are looking for touch screens and music, there are hundreds of phones that will suit these requirements without having to shell out so much money. Although the iPhone’s advertising is geared toward teens and young adults, does a teenager really need a $500 cell phone? This is the fist reason in our Top 5 reasons not to own an iPhone: Price.
Reason number two in the top 5 reasons not to own an iPhone, the battery. Did you know that you cannot replace the battery in your iPhone? If that battery dies, you are out of luck. Apple decided that soldering the battery to the unit was preferable to offering a proprietary battery or any standard cell phone battery. This way when your battery dies, and without a doubt it will in under two years, you have to get a new iPhone. Apparently many users did not realize this as Apple made no effort to make this common knowledge. Now they are in litigation over the battery issue. Therefore, if you are considering buying an iPhone be sure to get a warranty that covers the battery if you can. Otherwise you will be paying for another phone within 24 months which is the average life of a cell phone style battery.Although the iPhone is touted as having amazing internet capabilities, there are many shortcomings to its browser. The browsers search capabilities are severely lacking. This makes finding what you want on the internet difficult and time consuming. The other feature the browser lacks is the ability to store passwords. This may have been done as a security measure as cell phones are not as secure as a laptop, PC or Mac. However, keeping track of a lot of passwords is difficult. Internet searching and browser issues is our third reason.
Reason four not to own an iPhone is memory. You can purchase a 6 GB, an 8 GB, or a 16 GB iPhone. When you use up all of your available space on the iPhone, you must delete or back off content to another device like your PC or Mac. Many iPhone proponents claim that this storage capacity removes the need for a separate MP3 player, such as an iPod, therefore saving you money. In reality, teens can download 16 GB of music and video in an amazingly short amount of time. This leaves no memory for other applications or photos. You will still need a separate MP3 player so there are no real savings to be had here. There is no ability to upgrade the memory via a memory card or flash drive. This is another area where the iPhone is lacking.
Finally, reason number five in our top 5 reasons not to own an iPhone is the service provider. You are limited to AT&T’s cell phone service packages for the iPhone if you wish to use it. These packages are expensive as they all include data and internet. AT&T has no incentive to change their iPhone service pricing because they have exclusive rights to provide service to the iPhones. This has led to a great number of hacked iPhones on the market that can be used on other networks. As long as Apple and AT&T’s agreement stays exclusive, you will have hackers.
Overall, the iPhone is an overpriced, over hyped, cell phone. These top 5 reasons not to own an iPhone are valid and you should consider this before you buy one.
